Host a Cyclist During the Redlands Bicycle Classic

Redlands Bike Classic Host Family

When the Redlands Bicycle Classic, presented by the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians, began 40 years ago, one of the first priorities was finding homes for cycling teams to stay in while competing. At the time, Redlands had few hotels and motels, making host families essential to the event’s success. Over the years, the Classic has grown in both the number of cycling teams and the number of competition stages spread over five days.

Marian and Jere Chrispens of Yucaipa are among the many families who have welcomed race teams, and they plan to do so again during the week of April 9-13, 2025. Longtime bicycle enthusiasts, the Chrispens raised five children—four boys and a girl—who are now grown and living in different states. “So now we have a large house with empty bedrooms,” said Marian Chrispens. Their love for cycling led them to host teams, as they once took bicycle tours in the U.S. and abroad with their children and friends.

In 2024, the Chrispens hosted the Above and Beyond Cancer team, which included eight riders, a manager, a mechanic, and a coordinator who handled groceries and helped with meals. “We had a good time getting to know them and a little bit about where they came from. The team members were from many different places and one was from outside the U.S. He raced here while he was in the country attending a university,” Marian said

“They were a delightful group, full of energy and laughter! We were impressed with their service to the Redlands community. While here they visited several schools in Redlands to promote good living and exercise.” The Chrispens attended races and social events throughout the five-day Classic and enjoy opening their home to others, whether for cycling or medical care at Loma Linda University Medical Center.

“We’re looking forward to hosting another team of riders.” With the 2025 event approaching, host housing coordinator Robyn Purves is seeking more residents in Highland, Yucaipa, and Redlands to welcome cycling teams. Hosts provide a clean place to sleep, shower, and store bikes, with no obligation to cook or clean for the riders.

What's Required to Be a Host

People who agree to house riders must provide a bed or air mattress to include clean bedding. Sleeping bags are acceptable. Teams are used to sharing a room.

Interested in housing two or three riders or have room for a whole team? Please contact any of the three coordinators and provide them with your name, address, home and cell phone numbers and an email address.
