Breakaway Femmes Cycling Documentary Screening
This special screening is among the first public showings of Breakaway Femmes in the United States and the first screening on the West Coast. Breakaway Femmes tells the untold story of the women’s Tour de France of the 1980s. For six groundbreaking years, women raced over the same cobblestones, conquered the same mountains, and were cheered by the same throng of crowds as the men. These athletes delivered unforgettable underdog victories, fierce rivalries, and remarkable feats of courage while confronting discrimination, financial hardship, injuries, and the emerging doping culture. More than three decades later, the women reflect on what they lost, what they gained, and the enduring bond of sisterhood that shaped their lives. The audience is welcome to stay following the screening for a moderated discussion with Patty Peoples, a member of the 1984 U.S. Women’s Tour de France team and a featured cyclist in the documentary.
Tickets: $20 for general admission / $15 for students available online @ Eventbrite (with small fee) or at an AAUW Redlands branch meeting (no fee). The event's proceeds go to AAUW Redlands’ mission fund to advance equity for women and girls through education, empowerment, and advocacy, including scholarships, STEM education programs, and leadership training.
