Flag Day is observed in the United States on June 14 each year. It commemorates the adoption of the American flag by the Continental Congress on June 14, 1777.
The resolution passed by Congress stated:
"Resolved, That the flag of the thirteen United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation."
Why is Flag Day celebrated?
Flag Day honors the history and symbolism of the American flag and the ideals it represents, including unity, freedom, and national identity. Many communities mark the day with:
- Flag-raising ceremonies
- Patriotic programs and parades
- Educational events about flag etiquette and history
- Recognition of military veterans and active service members
Is Flag Day a federal holiday?
No. Flag Day is an official observance but not a federal holiday, so government offices, schools, and most businesses generally remain open.
Flag Day in Redlands
Many organizations, schools, veterans groups, and civic organizations in Redlands recognize Flag Day with ceremonies or special displays of American flags. Since Flag Day falls on a weekend this year, some local events may be incorporated into community celebrations and markets taking place throughout the city.
A fun historical note: the idea for a national Flag Day observance gained momentum in the late 1800s, and President Woodrow Wilson officially proclaimed June 14 as Flag Day in 1916. Congress later established it as a national observance in 1949.
